Pinetech is a family-owned and operated business with a trading history spanning almost 30 years.

Forest inventory services commenced in the Central North Island of New Zealand in the late 1980’s and expanded into Australia a few years later. We now have offices in Rotorua (New Zealand) and Traralgon (Victoria, Australia), and operations bases in Mount Gambier (South Australia) and Launceston (Tasmania).

Over time we have broadened our services beyond inventory to include a wide range of forest assessments. With 7 - 8 two-person crews in the field we have the capacity to undertake large projects anywhere in Australasia, and regularly work further afield in the greater Pacific Basin.

Our operations and outcomes have set the forest industry benchmark for quality data collection.

Meet our key people

Murray Llewellyn: General Manager

Murray is responsible for company leadership and administration, staff and product performance monitoring, pricing, and field work when capacity is stretched.

Murray holds science and forestry degrees from the University of Canterbury. On the completion of studies, he spent three years commercial hunting before taking an Environmental Forester position with the NZ Forest Service. Following the re-organisation of the NZFS in 1987 Murray established and led a small inventory contracting business based in Rotorua. Pinetech grew from there.

Murray still enjoys hunting and regularly visits old haunts throughout NZ to relive his youth. He is an enthusiastic All Blacks supporter and provides free advice to the AB’s coaches and selectors.

Chris Llewellyn: Director and Operations Manager (Australia)

Chris is responsible for all operations in Australia including client communications, employment and training, managing health and safety, leading crews in the field, and the logistics associated with field data capture, collation, and delivery.

Chris used a diameter tape for the first time when was he was eleven and was working on inventory jobs during his school holidays when he was fourteen. Chris left school to work full-time for Pinetech in 2008, spending a lot of time working in Australia on a fly in - fly out basis. He completed the NZ National Certificate in Forestry (Level 3 Mensuration) before moving to Melbourne in 2013 to establish a full-time presence in Australia.

Since moving to Australia, Chris has adopted the Victorian passion for watching games played with an oval ball.

Casey Roper: Operations Manager (New Zealand)

As Operations Manager Casey assumes the same duties in New Zealand as Chris does in Australia; directing operations from our depot on the Scion Campus in Rotorua. A significant component of his job comprises audits for Forest Managers of other contractor’s inventory and forestry work.

Casey left school and joined Pinetech in 1993, and has been in the forest assessment business ever since. He has vast experience in a wide range of assessment operations and is widely recognised as the benchmark for excellence in pre-harvest inventory (Plotsafe). Casey is a registered Trainer and Assessor with Competenz and is currently completing Level 4 Mensuration.

A long time pig hunter Casey now largely rests on his laurels and spends more time with his young family. He retains his love of dogs and is usually accompanied by a canine companion of dubious parentage.
